Fishing Wyatt Lake, Fort Bragg NC

Wyatt Lake Fort Bragg NC:  Lat / Long:  35.1652 -79.0910

Description:

Wyatt Lake is a small catfish lake located South West of the intersection of Manchester and Lamont Roads on Fort Bragg.   This lake can not be seen from the road.  This lake is about 100 yards wide and 400 yards long.  Although managed for catfish, it contains sunfish, bass and pickerel.  In the spring, aquatic grass goes and makes spinning lures difficult.  By prime bass season, the grass is gone.

Peter’s Observations:

Wyatt Lake is great if you live on Post and want to get on the water fast.  Plenty of structure and stumps on the east side.  Beware of submerged stumps.  I never had any luck along the dam breast or west side.  There are a few large pickerel so consider heavy leaders for lures.  Point D below is a very productive spot but the entire east side has been successful.  Consider going immediately for D if the spot is open and work back to the launch.  I have not caught any bass over 15 inches, but rarely left without catching something from a kayak.  Some of the sunfish are very big.

Access:

Wyatt Lake is outside the secure area of Fort Bragg and accessible by public roads.  The dirt road starts at Point #1 and traverses a slight rise to take you to the NE corner of the lake.  The road continues over the dam breast to the west bank.  Storm erosion can make this road rough to travel by cars.  Trucks and 4×4 SUVs should not have a problem.

Wyatt Lake Access

Point #1 is the access off of Lamont road.  It is marked by a sign.

Point #2 is the easiest launch site.  35.1652 -79.0910

Launch Site:  Erosion makes approaching the launch site difficult for vehicles.  Run off has formed a small sand beach that drops off rapidly.  Parking is basically finding a spot between trees without blocking others from reaching the launch.  The poor launch site keeps boats off the lake.

Bank Fishing:  Only a few sites allow access to the lake.  The west shore gets swampy near the water line. The Dam breast is usable for fishing.  Because it is near main post, bank fishermen keep a lot of pressure on the lake.

Timing:  No surprise here.  Early Spring through June is good.  April was the best month.  I did not catch a fish after June.  Mornings are good.  Last hour of light is the best time.  Top water plugs are productive.  Diving rappalla fish produce as well.  Flies and Hoppers work on a fly rod.
