Centerpoint Lions Club Park

17 APRIL 2021

The weather in the Hill Country keeps changing especially in April. Rain threatened all week but the Hill Country just got a small amount of much needed rain. Temperatures on 17 APR were in the 60’s with a strong wind but it was time to get on the water. I headed to new ground to fish the Guadalupe River at Centerpoint Lions Club Park.

The results were no bass but some very large sunfish. I took those on foam bugs on my fly rod and a popper on my spinning rig. I missed two bass strikes but it was a good day to be on the water.

Best action was near the lily pads around the boat launch and Dam.

I paddles about a 1/2 mile up river and had only strikes with no takers. There is a lot of submerged structure for bass and the north side of the river has a deep ledge starting about 1/4 mile up stream. There is a noticable cliff along the north bank and adjacent to it were a carp jumping and top water action around half an hour before dusk. Just no serious hits.

I fished a short time below the dam breast next to the low water crossing. Small fry hits on my foam bug and fly rod but again nothing serious. Down stream of the low water crossing is private property. Be respectful.

The Lion’s Club has a parking area and boat launch. The launch consist of gravel that becomes concrete near the water. Beware that the launch is very steep once in the water. So steep that getting out is difficult on the slimy, inclined surface.

Having used port-a-potties on 4 continents, the ones at the Lion’s Club rate in the top 3% for being nasty. Be prepared.

The north bank has several very nice guest cabins. If you are traveling, these might interest you and your family. These include several docks with the top of the line rope swings. Even with the temperature below 65F, I saw a young teenage boy take the rope and make the splash. Judging from the scream, the water was refreshing.

The Lion’s Club Park is a nice park for a small Hill Country Town that has a long tie to the Texas Rangers. https://www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/center_point/page-7.php
