This week was the initial TELEWORKING week at Lackland AFB. Lots of changes to include making the home office better by finishing up my stand up desk (also known as a podium) and getting an up to date laptop to work with a supported operating system and do my part to protect the network. I went with an HP.
Since the 1 1/4 hour one way commute was out of the picture, I had some welcome time on my hands. It was time to get the kayak in the water and test out the new rig on the Medina River. I was not disappointed.
25 MAR was more of a shake down cruise than fishing. I was able to get up river to places where I was unable to by shore fishing. Respecting property rights and other things that make life civil. Caught 2x large sunfish and some small young bass. About 7 fish in all. Without too much detail, I learned that the bass travel up stream from the deep holes to work the shallow parts of the river. I was watching carp swim up and a few bass.
27 MAR was a better trip. Paddling up river in a long deep pool, I chased up a few gar, but saw one gar zip a way that was on the order of 5 feet long if not bigger. His trunk was about as big around as my leg. Those monsters always give me an uneasy feeling. Got to the bend where the water gets shallow at the head of the pool. Caught a very nice sunfish at the first stop. At the second stop, my luck changed. Using a fake minnow without a spoon, a nice bass took the lure within 5 feet of the kayak in about a foot deep water. In the clear water, I watched the entire approach and attack. Some how he jumped and a brief struggle was on. He only had a few feet of line to work with but he did the best he could. Took a quick picture after he settled down and I removed the hook.
Shifted to a fly rod to change up and was not let down. Using a Woolly Buggar with a red tail, I hooked a large sunfish. This gal made a great fight but wore out. After the picture, I set her back in the river. The kayak was full of bright green fly line. I re-organized and did a few more cast before deciding it was getting too dark to extract hooks if I caught another. Two Tom turkeys took up a roost over the river within 30 yards and made it a good evening to be out on the water.
