Fishing at Fort Polk LA

Its Summer in Louisiana. Fishing is tough. Heat, hostile critters and jungle like vegetation. I just described Fort Polk.

Work has taken me to an installation where I’ve not spent a lot of time. Fort Polk (Home of JRTC: Joint Readiness Training Center) is adjacent to Leesville LA and not far from the Texas / Louisiana line. I have a few weekends to explore the local fishing spots. So Far, I’ve been to Alligator Lake and Toledo Bend. Fishing in Louisiana takes some research if you are new to the area. No matter, you can not beat the out of state fishing license cost.

Alligator Lake is a body of water at the North end of post and is accessible from State Road 28. Its tough to fish from shore in the summer due to all the weeds along the bank and vegetation in the water. Of course as the name sake states, alligators add a new wrinkle. There is a fishing pier but the vegetation still goes about 10 yards until you can reach open water.

Alligator Lake

Alligator Lake has a fishing pier and boats available for rent. Camping sites with hook ups are available on site. This facility does have a gate and limited hours. Call ahead for details https://polk.armymwr.com/programs/alligator-lake

The fishing pier is good for talking with other fishermen but its not a viable method to get after the bass. I saw a few hit the top. It was a nice distraction but not much for fishing.
