Indian Lake is very isolated on the back forty of Fort Drum. To get access you need to registar with isportsman https://fortdrum.isportsman.net/
This requires submitting information to Fort Drum and signing in to locations that are open at the time. This portal will also require submission of harvest / catches. Because its on Fort Drum, you need to check to make sure the training area is open and not under use for military training or shut down due to live fire exercises. This requirement reduces the traffic on this lake but the locals are aware of the productive waters.
The boat ramp has limited parking for a few trucks and trailers. The gravel road to the ramp is serviceable but narrow with several blind turns.
Indian Lake is connected with Narrow Lake to give a lot of shore line to work with. I caught the crappie featured above and several bass on the western shore on the evening of 3 July. This spot (#1) was among the lilly pads near the connecting channel to Narrow Lake. Also nearby is Indian Pond. Both times I went out to Indian Lake I saw bears crossing the road near dusk.
Top water plugs and weedless crank baits produced action. The shallow areas have a lot of underwater vegetation like most lakes in the North Country. Lilly pads will cover the shore line where the bottom allows. I worked these areas and they produced results. Two large fish dove down and used the vegetation to free them from the treble hook. Trolling a popper on the way in for the evening got a strike.
Because its so remote, the flies are thick. Be prepared. The drive out on the gravel road is worth the trip. Below is the route I recommend:
