This afternoon was about the Autumn leaves. I left the kayak and rods behind. The winds were gusting and I was not ready to take on the chop on a lake. I hit the trail at a close-by Preserve along the Indian River. The leaves were brilliant.
If you have kids and live near Fort Drum, this is a must stop in the Fall. The trails are rolling, and the paths are dry. There are enough rocks for young ones to climb.
Parking is limited but there is plenty of shoulder on the road.
The top trail map is deceptive. There are additional trails that can be reached by canoe on the south bank of Indian River. I should have brought the kayak, but the afternoon was well spent on the north side of factory road. The pictures will speak for themselves. The canoe launch is on the river at the bottom of Dora’s Deck.
The background on Bakers Woods is an interesting read. See the link below.

Looking up the steps to get to the top of Hemlock Hill
Looking down the steps to climb up Hemlock Hill. From this point, I took the Hemlock trail back and stopped hoping to catch a glimpse of a roaming bear.
Future trips if weather permits, I will bring the kayak and visit the trails south of Indian River.
