The Medina River has stopped running the past 6 weeks due to lack of rain. The Hill Country got some rain so I went to check on it late in the dusk while our grand daughter was taking a bath.
To my surprise the water level remained higher than I expected but not enough to fill the big pools and start the current to go down stream.
I decided to throw a few cast since it was near dark and a cool evening. I quickly tied on a big popper (3 inch plus tail) and used a wire leader anticipating a gar. On cast number six, a big fish struck. At first I thought it was a Gar since it pulled like a log. I horsed it in but to my surprise a big bass jumped out of the water.
I got him in on the wet pebbles and of course I was in a rush to leave the house I forgot my phone/camera. He was so big he could not swim out in two inches of water. I gave him a shove and he worked his way to the deeper water. Without documentation, I put him at about 17 inches and 4 pounds. Biggest bass of the year which included a couple of nice fish. It was the first bass I caught in the Medina River for months. Nice way to end a Fall day.
