After some research on line, I found that the Army has a Recreation Area on Toledo Bend. The area has a boat launch, kayaks and canoes to rent as well as bass boats for rent. On the site is a sand beach and cottages and RV sites. I plotted my route and headed to the Sabine River.
Toledo Bend is one of the hot bass fishing waters in America and has numerous tournaments. https://toledobendlakecountry.com/fishing-tournaments

I rented a canoe to have all my water, snacks and tackle dry and within reach. Its a busy body of water so anticipate speed boats, bass boats, rocket boats. I will state the obvious: July in Louisiana is hot. I called it quits after 6 hours on the water but I did catch a few.
I caught this guy while trolling across the open water heading for a cove. Getting the canoe to slow down to pull him in was the challenge but it was effective. I caught him on a fat minnow with a deep dive spoon. The tactic is to heave out the lure, set the bail and slowly paddle across deep water. Caution: Too much line could get caught up in a speed boat. The trick is to paddle, navigate and keep a touch on the rod to alert when you get a strike.
Of course fishing slowed down after 1100. I did some fly fishing for pan fish and had good results. I took a Big Blue Gill right at the docks at the Army Rec Area. Fly fishing below the Mason Dixon line often becomes a spectator sport since its not often seen in southern waters. I’ve always had extra luck with an audience fly fishing in the South.
