Trout run Trail head is along PA 72 north of Jonestown. The trail head provides two short paths that lead to moonshine trail (old paved road).
Description: Trout Run is a small trout stream that runs east out of the valley between the 1st and 2d Mountains and enters the Swatara Creek near
the intersection of PA 72 and PA 443. This stream has thick underbrush on both banks and is a challenge to get to but worth the effort. It is stocked by the PA Game Commission. Make a point of checking the stocking schedule if you want newly introduced fish into the wild. I hit this stream while visiting family but never went to it while living in PA. I did not know what I was missing. The hemlocks are unforgiving. Take lots of tackle. Spinning rigs are better suited but fly fishing is great in this small creek.
Access: The easiest access point is the trail head of Trout Run Trail at Lat/Long: 40.482886 -76.545809
From the parking area at the trail head, a 10 minute hike gets you to moonshine trail. This old road parallels the creek and you can find trails through the thickets that lead to the water. There is a bridge (LAT/LONG: 40.484535 -76.547949) on a unimproved road that allows you to enter the water. Several other bridges are further down stream before Trout Run enters the Swatara Creek.
Launch Site: none. This creek is too shallow for kayaks unless you are neat where it enters the Swatara Creek.
Bank Fishing: This is almost impossible to do on this stretch of water. To fish Trout Run, you need to find an opening and wade up and down stream from hole to hole. There is a Bridge over the creek where you can slip into the stream bed. (see Image Above) at LAT /LONG: 40.484535 -76.547949.
Timing: The forest surrounding Trout Run is Thick. You can catch fish well into late morning.
