27 MARCH ZION Day II A Day to Slow Down

Trail head at end of the paved road in Kolob Canyon

We woke up and went out on the balcony to watch the sun rise over the sand stone formations.  We gathered together and had a great breakfast at a reasonable price in the Majestic Lodge Restaurant.  The view in the dining room is about as good in any place I have ever been.

Our strategy was to take it easy and be on hand in the afternoon to meet with family inbound from Los Angeles.  We drove to Kolob Canyon which is the north west portion of the National Park.  The Kolob Canyon is not as deep as the Court of the Patriarchs but it is just as colorful and its an easy hike to get to the high ground to view out to 70-100 miles.  The best part is that there are less visitors.  We had lunch at the picnic area at Kolob Canyon with just the peanut butter sandwiches and fruit out of my back pack.

Snow was on the top of the mountains.  The hike was a mile with a gentle climb and lots of parking.

After returning to the Majestic Lodge and linking up with our daughter, we had dinner at Oscars.  Food was great and we jumped on the shuttle after diner to head to the easy trail in the Zion NP that goes from the visitor center to the Museum.  It was an easy walk along the Virgin River.  We saw mule deer up close.  The best entertainment was two ducks working the rapids and diving for their diner.  We got a great group picture with the Canyon wall behind us at sunset.

All Together

Bottom Line we hiked 5 miles combining two hikes. The time to take it easy and just catch up was one of those evenings you hoped would never end.

Note that in the evenings, the crowds rapidly thin out. Only a few others were out for a walk.
