Crossing the Mississippi

Opportunities present new challenges.  We are returning to Texas.  We saw so much history in such a short time living in Virginia.  The Virginia Beach area was just starting to get interesting fishing wise after obtaining an access permit to the Norfolk

Reservoirs for Kayak Fishing.  Of course the opportunity happened after I renewed my annual Virginia License.  Virginia Beach had so many lakes nearby, but they all involve fighting Hampton Roads traffic and that is something I will not miss. The Summer days are too hot in Texas to fish (time to catch up on Bluecordfishermen), but the evenings offer some new challenges on the Medina River.  Currently the Medina is not flowing but there is enough water in the deep pools to allow the fish to survive until the Fall rains come.  I’ve been watching the gar and carp take bugs off the top.  One miss so far but I will sort that out in the weeks ahead.  An occasional bass breaks the water chasing whatever is hovering over the river.  The evenings bring the bats to the water and they are confused by the work with my fly rod but not enough to make a play for the dry fly (but some close calls).  The Kayak did not make the cargo list and remains in Virginia Beach with a family that will make good use of it for catching bass near Pungo.  An upgrade is waiting for me after things settle down.  Several lakes are in the region but the Guadalupe River is what I am looking forward to getting know better and catching some Guadalupe Bass.
