Dam Below Sidney Baker Street

Another morning getting periodic services done on my truck at the Ford dealer in Kerrville.  After getting an estimate that was three times higher than I expected, I walked to the Guadalupe River to catch some fish using my fly rod.  Along the walk was a Denny’s.  I will refrain from giving my report on their breakfast other than it was way over priced.

I walked on a trail that leads to an old foot bridge over the river about 75 yards down stream from the dam breast.  The river bottom is all Texas limestone and the river cuts deep into it in long 2-4 feet deep grooves.  It looks snaky but with so many small fry, I doubt there are many snakes.  I just kept my eyes open for jake.

I started on the south bank working up along the reeds just getting hits from small sunfish.  When I started toward the dam breast and the deeper grooves, everything changed.  I caught 10 or so fish.  One small bass and the rest were sunfish.  One sunny was very large but once again the picture does not do him justice for his size.  I missed on large bass that broke the water.  All of this action was on green foam hoppers that I tied.  After about thirty minutes the frenzy stopped and I moved on.  My assessment is that the grooves compartment the action so it doesn’t spook the rest of the fish.  The tower/ pavilion people had a good display of successful fly fishing for about an hour.

I worked the primary channel going down stream and caught a few more small ones along the way to a pool.  This pool was crystal clear and had plenty of fish including a big catfish some carp and two large Guadalupe Bass.  I caught at least another ten sunfish but got to see an actual attack by a Guadalupe Bass.  I hooked a small sunfish on the far side of the pool and was bringing him across the channel.  One of the large bass struck and attacked the sunfish on my hook broadside.  It came about and gobbled the sunfish so that only his eyes and mouth could be seen sticking out of the large mouth.  I pulled him in but he caught sight of me within 3 yards of my grasp and spit the sunny out.  I estimated him to be about 16” long.  That was one busy hole.

I returned back to the trail hitting the ripples.  I caught a small fish/large minnow that was very aggressive with my woolly buggar.  They hit several times but only one got hooked.

Ken Stoepel Ford had my truck waiting on me with new plugs and fresh tranny fluid.  Great morning to take off from work.  Combined with my recent Lost Maples Trip, this has been my most successful August fishing wise since getting serious about fishing in 2017.  20+ fish in 3 hours.

I returned to this spot while getting my wife’s car some maintenance on 14 SEP 19 and just got one. Timing is everything. About 10:45 is the cut off line in the morning. After that the fish go quiet until the evening.
