New Kayak

Bass Pro Shop: 12T Ascend

After 18 months of shore fishing, I had some overtime and used it to get a new Kayak. Its a step up from the Eagle Talon sit on top from Dick’s but the price was worth the seat alone.

This model has lots of room and is extremely stable. I have not attempted to stand but this is a fast kaya built for fishing.

PROS:

  • Stability
  • Seat is fantastic
  • Trim keeps her straight
  • 2x Rod holders and cargo bungee cord netting
  • Fixed Paddle Holder (great for transporting)

Cons:

  • Heavy: There are no center handles to easily carry.
  • Two man carry: has bow and stern handles but you need to find the second guy.

Home Built Dolly

I built a simple dolly to help load and launch. Spent about $35.00 on parts and was my own design. In store versions start at $80.00 and quickly go up.

Parts included:

  • 36 inch axle
  • 2x Large Lawn Mower Wheels (Plastic Hubs)
  • 4x Washers and cotter pins
  • 3x C-Clamps
  • 34″ of a left over 2×4
  • Foam from an old sleeping pad
  • Duck Tape

Construction Tips

  • Purchase the wheels, axle, washers and C-Clamps at the same time to ensure they can fit together.
  • Measure the length of the 2×4 by subtracting the amount of axle needed to hold bushings, washers, cotter keys and the wheel.
  • Insert cotter keys outside first and after attaching wheels use the clamps to secure the axle.
  • Duck Tape is your friend. Attempted several methods to attach padding and concluded nothing beats duck tape.

Kayaks can get you to places shore fishing can’t. This is especially true in Texas where almost all the water front property is clearly marked with Purple for no trespassing.
